“My dog knows all the rules but disobeys them even when I’m around, as if I don’t exist!”
Does that ring a bell?
Being a dog owner, you might have experienced this and trust me, it’s no picnic.
It’s one of the most frustrating situations to be in because you know your dog is smart, and you’ve put in the effort to train them. Your dog should be better behaved than this by now.
Problem is—they choose to ignore you.
Let’s have a heart-to-heart here.
I want you to recognize some signs your dog might be showing, which could hint at what I’d call the “invisible dog parent” problem:
1.) Your dog has mastered the commands.
This is the most confusing part of being an “invisible dog parent”. Most dogs have the capacity to quickly understand and follow commands they’ve been taught but…
…this can create a false belief that knowing commands will always lead to obedience.
2.) You have a sense that your dog is indifferent to your rules.
Extremely common.
Your dog understands the rules but decides not to follow them when you aren’t around and sometimes even when you are in the same room. This shows a lack of established authority.
3.) Your dog responds better to someone else.
This can be a clear sign.
If your dog listens to commands from a friend or another family member but not from you, then you might not be perceived as the parent or leader.
4.) Inconsistency in your training.
Dogs thrive on consistency. If the training or rules aren’t consistently enforced, this can cause confusion and lead to selective obedience.
5.) Your commands or rules don’t have value to your dog.
Sometimes the issue is not about the command itself, but rather that your dog doesn’t see value in obeying it, especially if there is something more enticing at that moment.
6.) Your dog challenges your instructions.
If your dog tends to challenge or test the limits with you, it’s a sign they see you as more of a friend rather than as a parent.
7.) You lack parental authority in your dog’s eyes.
Parental authority is a combination of Consistency + Authority. Invisible dog parents may enforce rules, but if not done with authority and consistency, they’re not seen as the parent.
