What Is Obedience Training For Puppies?

When it comes to dog training for your new pup, there are some unique challenges that you would not have experienced, had it been an adult dog. During your pup’s training, it is important to remember that he is still learning and growing into an adult dog. This means that some of his personality traits may not have manifested yet. Teaching him the right habits early will prevent bad behaviors later.

With puppies, it is critical to have 1-on-1 training sessions with the trainers and then continue the training program at home. As your pup grows, you will be able to recognize the bad behavior and nip it in the bud before it becomes a permanent habit.

The incredible trainers and staff were so wonderful to work with and did such a great job with our puppy in the perfect puppy program. She loved it there and learned so much. We will be taking her back often for more training, socializing, and fun!

Hali is a 12/10 trainer. She was incredibly helpful in defining our dog’s strengths and areas of growth in a way that built on itself. Her training of us to train our dog was exceptional and very tailored to our goals. We started with a constantly on edge border collie pup who we could only walk at the wee hours of the morning and night to avoid any possible triggers to a calm dog who we can take him on walks and manage his reactions to the world. The report card process was particularly helpful in understanding where he was at in his learning and how we could support him. I can thank Hali enough for her support.

Ponyo absolutely loves her time at daycare. She is making so many new friends, learning her manners, and getting lots of physical and mental exercise! We adore the entire staff, they all take great care of her. Her trainer, Niko has been so helpful and enthusiastic about having Ponyo as a student, and he writes detailed reports about her days. The front desk staff is also great! Hayle cares so deeply about these pups and always has exciting stories about their daily escapades.

Meet The Team Behind The Transformation

Our trainers are passionate about helping dogs and families build clear communication, confidence, and lasting results. Each team member brings unique experience, dedication, and heart to every dog’s journey.

Ryan

In 2007, a roommate told me he was getting a puppy and asked if I wanted to come along. I had nothing else planned, so I went with him and unexpectedly came home with a puppy of my own. He was adorable, but reality quickly set in. Accidents happened everywhere, including my condo, the elevator, and common walkways, and my neighbors were not impressed. I realized I was completely unprepared. That experience sparked my determination to learn everything I could about training. What began as an impulse decision became one of the most important turning points of my life and career.

Hali

I love being part of a dog’s journey and helping dogs and their families communicate clearly so life feels easier and more enjoyable for everyone involved. Watching progress unfold is what motivates me every day. I especially enjoy solving behavior challenges and finding practical ways to guide dogs toward better choices. Seeing that moment when a dog suddenly understands what we are asking is incredibly rewarding. It reminds me why I chose this path. Helping families build trust, confidence, and lasting communication with their dogs is something I truly care about and feel grateful to do every single day.

Niko

After moving from Michigan to work in the outdoor industry, I managed teams at rafting companies and later worked at a ski resort. My career path shifted when I began struggling with my dog, who escaped kennels and jumped through windows. I realized that improving communication between humans and dogs could change lives. That experience opened my eyes to understanding canine behavior. Today, I focus on helping families create stronger, balanced relationships with their dogs. Supporting people as they build trust, structure, and harmony with their pets is meaningful to me.

Kristen

I discovered my passion for dog training while volunteering with a service dog organization. I was drawn to understanding each dog’s needs and adjusting my approach to help them succeed. Over time, I transitioned into working with pet dogs and their families, where I found my calling. I enjoy guiding dogs and people through the learning process and witnessing the transformation that happens when communication improves. Helping dogs feel confident and supported is just as important to me as empowering owners with practical tools. Being part of that growth motivates me every day.

Amelia

Becoming a trainer was never part of my original plan. I started by working at animal shelters, helping stray animals find loving homes, which was an incredibly meaningful chapter of my life. I later worked on farms, attended college to become a vet tech, and gained experience in daycares and clinics before joining Train Walk Poop. Along the way, I realized how powerful training can be in helping dogs grow and thrive. Watching a dog gain confidence and truly become themselves is something I find beautiful and inspiring. Helping animal lovers succeed with their pets makes my work deeply fulfilling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many breeders recommend training puppies after completing their vaccine series. However, dog experts recommend one should enroll their puppy in private dog training classes as soon as they get home. According to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s Position Statement, the best time to enroll him in a puppy class is during his developmental stage, ages 6 to 16 weeks. Enrolling your puppies in puppy socialization classes would be ideal for helping them explore new locations, dogs, cats, and people. The puppy class would also benefit your puppy when he gets to the adolescent stage between the ages of 8 to 18 months to keep him happy and friendly.

Most dog owners think that training their dogs to be obedient is enough. Your dog may have mastered the stay and sit command, but it would be better to teach him something new. Whoever said you could not teach an old dog new tricks was wrong. Training an adult dog is possible. There is training for dock diving and trick dogs, therapy dogs, nose work, and agility. Teaching your dog new skills will help him develop more trust and confidence.

Dogs, just like people, are different. Some dogs are slow to understand certain commands, while others learn fast. Sometimes dogs cannot understand what their owners are asking of them. This can be frustrating both to the dog and the owner. As the owner, you may find such behavior as digging or chewing on things irritating, but this is normal dog behavior. Simply telling your dog “stop” or “bad” may not make sense to your pet.

If you try to stop their normal behavior, it will lead to trouble. Understand that dogs do not know what is wrong or right. The best way to train your dog to behave better is by teaching them to use his paws, mouth, and nose without having to destroy things. For example, instead of stopping him from chewing on household stuff, you can train him to chew on toys. With time, with the help of positive dog trainers, you will start to see desirable results, while preventing your dog from mental or physical harm.

Yes. It is never too late to start training a dog, no matter the dog’s age. Some dogs, especially those adopted from animal shelters, have timid personalities or anxiety. Training them provides mental stimulation and builds confidence, strengthening the human-pet bond. You should start puppy socialization classes immediately you adopt a puppy from an animal shelter.

Dog training can help your puppy or dog bark less. It is a dog’s natural instinct to bark, but some are nosier while others are naturally quiet. With professional training, all dogs can learn how to moderate their barking tendencies.

Potty training a dog can be daunting and frustrating for most dog owners. Thankfully, professional dog trainers have the skills to potty train your puppy or dog. A potty-trained dog is happier and offers relief to its owner.

Nobody wants to be near an aggressive dog. Professional dog trainers use behavior modification techniques to help dogs overcome aggression. During a dog training class, your dog will learn how to properly greet other dogs and people. They also learn how to socialize around children and other dogs.

You will be glad to know that professional dog trainers offer different programs to accommodate diverse breeds. These programs are fully customized. You can enroll your dog in a dog training program that will allow him to learn at his own pace without putting unnecessary pressure on him.

Yes. It is vital that you be a part of the training process to help you and your pet create a bond of trust. Being part of the process makes it easy to establish obedience in your dog than when you are away. If you are not part of the training, your dog may find it hard to translate lessons taught into the home environment.

Professional dog trainers use rewards to positively reinforce good behavior and gentle corrections to discourage unwanted behaviors. The most experienced trainers use many types of games and exercises to make learning fun!

The amount of time your dog spends in a kennel varies based on their individual needs. Our social classes run from 9 am-12 pm and again from 1 pm-4 pm, offering up to 6 hours of interaction and playtime each day.

Some dogs thrive with this level of socialization and enjoy the full 6 hours, while most prefer shorter play sessions of about an hour before needing a break. Puppies, in particular, might play endlessly if allowed, but we ensure they get naps to stay balanced and avoid overstimulation.

Our structured schedule helps dogs develop polite play habits and reduces stress, resulting in happier, well-behaved pets.

Yes, we guarantee results! If your dog doesn’t reach their primary training goal, we’ll add free one-on-one sessions until they do. Our confidence comes from consistently successful outcomes with thousands of dogs.

We combine positive reinforcement with fair boundaries, teaching new behaviors with treats and praise first, then adding accountability once understanding is established. This balanced approach prepares dogs for real-world situations where clear boundaries keep them safe.

Training collars, when used correctly, are actually safer than regular collars for dogs who pull. They keep your dog from slipping away, spread pressure evenly around the neck, and help dogs learn to stop pulling faster.

We mainly use the vibration feature as a “look at me” signal that means good things are coming. These collars help your dog enjoy off-leash freedom while staying safe, like a seat belt for when unexpected things happen.

Private sessions involve weekly sessions where you learn to train your dog, with progress depending on your at-home practice. Board & Train provides faster results with less daily commitment from you, as your dog builds skills directly with their trainer before we transfer those skills to you.

Absolutely! While we’ll honestly share what we’ve observed works best based on thousands of dogs, the final decisions about your dog’s training are always yours to make.

We can’t promise to completely fix reactivity or aggression, but we can help make it much better. Every dog improves with our training, making walks and home life much more enjoyable for everyone.

Puppy Scholar is our day school. You drop your puppy off before 9am and pick them up after 4pm, Monday through Friday, and our trainers work with them throughout the day on potty training, crate skills, leash basics, and household manners. You get a trained puppy without missing the puppy stage. It’s available as a 1-week introduction starting at $699 or a 4-week program starting at $2,999.

Perfect Puppy Boarding School is our 2-week overnight program starting at $3,199. Your puppy stays with their trainer Monday through Friday and comes home on weekends, which means faster progress with less daily commitment from you. Puppy Scholar is day school, so your puppy sleeps at home every night. Both include weekly handling sessions so you learn the same skills, plus group classes and follow-up support after the program ends.

Our puppy programs start at $699 for a 1-week day school and run up to $5,999 for the 6-week combined boarding and day school program. Every program includes 2 months of group classes, 6 months of unlimited follow-up sessions, and lifetime coaching by phone and email. Call or text 801-613-1364 and we’ll help you pick the right fit, even if it’s the less expensive one.

We require a current rabies vaccination. We also recommend DHPP and bordetella, but they aren’t required. Just bring your shot records at drop-off and we’ll get them on file. Some breeders and veterinarians suggest waiting until the full vaccine series is finished, but that can mean missing the most valuable learning window, so give us a call and we’ll walk you through how we keep young puppies safe while still getting them started early.

Programs, pricing, hours, and policies on this page are accurate as of 7/31/26. See our current pricing page for the latest, or call or text 801-613-1364.

Why Choose Us for Puppy Training in SLC Utah?

Experienced Puppy Trainers

Our Salt Lake City puppy trainers specialize in early development training, understanding the unique challenges and learning patterns of young dogs. We use positive, engaging methods designed specifically for puppies’ developing minds and shorter attention spans.

Personalized Support

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all puppy training. Every puppy in our Salt Lake City programs receives a customized training plan based on their personality, your family’s lifestyle, and your specific goals. Our Dependable Dog Guarantee ensures your puppy will reach their training goals or we’ll add additional sessions free of charge.

Real-World Practice

Our training doesn’t just work in the classroom—it works in real life. We train puppies to respond reliably in everyday situations they’ll encounter throughout Salt Lake City, from busy parks to outdoor cafes, ensuring they become well-adjusted adult dogs.

What We Focus On in Every Puppy Training Program

Housebreaking and Crate Training

Consistent potty training is often cited as the most frustrating aspect of raising a puppy. Our structured programs help establish reliable bathroom habits and positive crate associations, so you can say goodbye to middle-of-the-night accidents and cleanup.

Confidence and Socialization

The critical socialization window for puppies closes around 16 weeks of age. Our Salt Lake City puppy classes emphasize positive exposure to various people, animals, environments, and stimuli to develop confident, well-adjusted adult dogs who can handle new situations with ease.

Obedience and Listening Skills

From basic commands like sit, down, and come to more advanced skills like loose-leash walking, our programs build a foundation of listening and responsiveness that will serve your puppy throughout their life.

Behavior and Manners

Addressing common puppy challenges like nipping, jumping, chewing inappropriate items, and excessive barking is central to all our training programs. We teach your puppy appropriate alternatives while helping them understand boundaries.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start training my puppy?

Training should begin as soon as you bring your puppy home, typically around 8 weeks of age. Early training takes advantage of your puppy’s rapid learning period and helps prevent problem behaviors from developing. Our Salt Lake City puppy training programs can accommodate puppies as young as 8 weeks old.

What’s the difference between board & train and day training?

In our Perfect Puppy Boarding School, your puppy stays with their trainer overnight, receiving 24/7 training and care. This accelerates learning through consistency and intensive training. With day training like our Puppy Scholar program, your puppy trains during the day and returns home in the evening, allowing you to maintain your evening routine while providing professional training during the day.

Are puppy training group classes included in all programs?

Yes, all our puppy training programs include two months of group classes at no additional cost. These classes help reinforce what your puppy has learned while providing crucial socialization opportunities and teaching them to respond in group settings.

Can I attend training sessions with my puppy?

Absolutely! We believe owner education is essential for long-term success. All our programs include hands-on training sessions where you learn to communicate effectively with your puppy and reinforce their training at home.

What if my puppy is shy or nervous?

Shy or nervous puppies benefit tremendously from our training programs. Our experienced trainers use gentle, confidence-building techniques to help timid puppies overcome their fears. The controlled exposure to new experiences in our programs helps anxious puppies learn that the world isn’t so scary after all.

Puppy Training Questions Every New Owner Asks

A new puppy is wonderful for about three days. Then the biting starts, the carpet gets ruined, and 2 a.m. feels very far from the picture you had in your head. Good news: none of that means you got a bad puppy. It means you got a normal one. Here is what we tell every new puppy family, this is the school Where Puppies Learn Excellence, after all.

What age should a puppy start training?

As early as 8 weeks. A puppy’s brain is wide open between 8 and 16 weeks. What they learn in that window, good or bad, sticks for life. You are not waiting for your puppy to be ready for training. Your puppy is already learning from you every single day. Training just decides what the lessons are.

What is the 7-7-7 rule for puppies?

It is a simple socialization guide: by about 16 weeks, your puppy should experience at least 7 different surfaces, 7 different places, 7 kinds of people, 7 new sounds, and so on. The exact number is not magic. The point is variety early on. A puppy that meets the world in small, positive doses becomes a confident adult dog. A puppy kept in a bubble becomes the dog that barks at skateboards.

How long does it take to potty train a puppy?

Most puppies can be reliably potty trained in 2 to 4 weeks with a consistent routine, and many are mostly there sooner. The secret is not punishing accidents, it is preventing them: out after every meal, nap, and play session, and a reward the second the job is done outside. If your puppy is past 4 months and still having regular accidents, something in the routine is missing, and that is fixable.

When should I start crate training?

Night one. The crate is not a punishment, it is your puppy’s bedroom, and the earlier it feels that way the easier your life gets. Feed meals in it, toss treats in it, keep it near you at night for the first while. A puppy that loves the crate sleeps better, potty trains faster, and rides in the car without drama.

Why does my puppy bite so much, and when does it stop?

Puppy biting is normal. It is how puppies play and explore, and it peaks during teething, around 3 to 6 months. It fades fastest when your puppy learns two things: teeth on skin ends the fun, and there is always a better thing to bite. If the biting feels over the top, bring it up on your free call. It is one of the most common things families come to us for, and one of the quickest to turn around.

Puppy classes or private puppy training?

Young puppies get a lot from classes: safe socialization with other puppies during the exact window it matters most. Private training wins when there is a specific problem, or when your schedule needs it. Plenty of our families start with puppy classes and add private sessions for the stubborn bits. Ask us and we will tell you the honest order for your puppy.

How much does puppy training cost?

Our programs range from about $700 to $6,000. Every program is customized and carries the Dependable Dog Guarantee. The honest math: a few hundred dollars in the first months prevents the thousand-dollar problems, chewed furniture, vet-visit-level accidents, and the years of stress that come from skipping the foundation. See the full breakdown on our training pricing page.

I missed the early window. Is it too late for my puppy?

No. The 8-to-16-week window is the easiest time to shape a puppy, but it is not the only time. A 6-month-old or a one-year-old with rough habits is still very trainable. The plan changes, the outcome does not. Do not let guilt about a missed window cost you the next six months too.
