One dog could not be left alone for three years

For three years, one blind Aussie could not be left alone. He barked, chewed, and tried to escape out of windows. His family had tried other trainers, daycares, and boarding. Nothing worked.

Then he came to us. Today he goes to daycare every day and, in his owner’s words, is “the happiest and healthiest he has ever been.”

A team of people like you helped write that ending. Now we are looking for the next one.

Do you want a job you look forward to?

Some jobs are only for the money or the convenience. You show up, count the minutes, and go home wondering if any of it mattered. This is not that job. At Train Walk Poop, you spend your day doing work you love, and you go home knowing you made a difference.

“This is probably the best job I’ve ever had.” Former Kennel Tech

Who we are

We are a dog training, daycare, and boarding business in South Salt Lake. We have been training dogs since 2007, and we have worked with thousands of dogs. We have more than 265 five-star Google reviews, and we have been on ABC4 and Fox13. We started where you are, and nearly all of our trainers began as kennel techs.

You do not need to already be a dog trainer. You need to love dogs, pay close attention, and want to learn. We teach you the rest, with a team beside you and a clear path to grow.

This is not a job where you just watch dogs play. You will help with their daily care, safely manage group play, keep our facility clean, and learn how to help dogs become safer, calmer, and more confident. Most of our play groups run with 12 dogs or fewer for each staff member, so every dog gets watched closely.

How we train (please read before you apply)

At Train Walk Poop, play and trust come first. We also use e-collars, prong collars, bark collars, and other tools that help a dog reach their potential faster and become their best self. Using these tools the way we teach is a required part of this job. We will train you how. If you are not willing to use them, please do NOT apply.

How it works

  1. Tell us about you. Send us your info with the short form on this page.
  2. Meet the team. We’ll invite you to an in person interview.
  3. Get paid to level up your dog training skills. Learn on the job, get coached by our team, and earn raises as you grow.

Previous experience with dogs or animals is strongly preferred. It can come from dog daycare, a kennel or boarding facility, a shelter or rescue, a vet clinic, grooming, dog training, pet sitting, or dog walking. Caring for several dogs of your own can count too.

What you’ll do

Dog care, handling, and play groups (about 60%)

  • Safely handle dogs of different sizes, ages, and temperaments
  • Supervise and join structured daycare play groups
  • Watch dog behavior and help keep play safe
  • Help with exercise, enrichment, and structured activities
  • Learn basic dog training and behavior skills
  • Share what you notice about each dog with the team
  • Help care for dogs in daycare, boarding, and training programs

Cleaning and facility care (about 20%)

Clean kennels, play areas, and daycare spaces. Pick up waste, wash bowls, do laundry, restock supplies, and follow our sanitation steps. This is regular, physical work, and clean spaces keep dogs healthy and safe.

Daily care and operations (about 20%)

Prepare meals, help with medications using our procedures, set up dog areas, check water, help with check-ins and check-outs, and keep the facility running smoothly.

Who we’re looking for

  • Dependable and always on time
  • Hardworking, and happy to stay active all day
  • Comfortable handling several dogs of different sizes and temperaments
  • Willing to clean, do laundry, and do physical work
  • Able to follow detailed safety and care steps
  • Patient and observant
  • Open to coaching and feedback
  • A good teammate who wants to grow, not just pass the time

Backgrounds that do great here: animal shelter and rescue volunteers, dog fosters, vet assistants, groomers and bathers, horse and farm people (barn hands, ranch hands, 4-H, FFA), caregivers and CNAs, disability and autism support (direct support professionals, behavior technicians), childcare workers and camp counselors. No dog job needed. If you have a dog, foster, or volunteer with animals, tell us. We train you.

This may be a great fit if you…

  • Have always wanted to work with animals and are ready to make it a career
  • Have worked in a kennel, daycare, boarding facility, shelter, rescue, vet clinic, grooming shop, or dog training business
  • Have lots of hands-on experience caring for dogs

This is not a good fit if you…

  • Only want to play with dogs
  • Do not want to clean or do laundry
  • Are uncomfortable with physical work
  • Are uncomfortable handling dogs
  • Are not willing to use training tools, including e-collars, prong collars, and bark collars, the way we teach
  • Want a job where training tools are optional
  • Are unable to follow safety procedures
  • Are only looking for a paycheck
  • Want occasional or temporary work
  • Cannot reliably work the schedule listed

Your path here

On day 1, you start as a Junior Kennel Tech. About day 14, you are a full member of the play group team, and we celebrate it. About day 60 to 90, you drop “Junior.” Along the way you can earn three certifications. Each one comes with a raise, and you also get raises on your work anniversary. Techs can grow into Senior and Master Tech roles, and many move on to become trainers. Nearly all of our trainers started as kennel techs.

Training and onboarding

Every new team member starts with a two-week onboarding and trial period. You will learn our dog-handling and safety systems, how we care for dogs, and how we clean and sanitize. You will finish self-paced training modules, get hands-on coaching, and learn the basics of dog behavior and training. A successful trial period is required before permanent employment is offered.

Schedule

Monday-Friday, 11:30 AM-7:30 PM. We care for dogs 365 days a year, including weekends and holidays, so holiday shifts may sometimes be needed. We rotate them fairly. You must be able to work the schedule above.

Pay and benefits

Starting pay: $14/hour. Benefits start after the eligibility periods and may include dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance, paid time off after 90 days, employee discounts, an employee referral program, and professional development help. You also earn raises for certifications and work anniversaries.
