The Truth About How Dogs Really Learn

Every dog (even my dog) eventually has this moment:

“Yeah yeah, I know what you want me to do… but what if I just don’t feel like it?”

Sound familiar? Maybe it’s when your dog “suddenly forgets” what “come” means the second they see a squirrel. Or when they look right at you and choose to keep jumping on guests anyway.

They’re not being bad. They’re being dogs. And they’re asking a totally fair question: “What happens if I just… don’t?”

Here’s how we answer that question at Train Walk Poop:

We start with positive training – treats, praise, guidance. We make learning FUN. Your dog learns what “come ” means through rewards and repetition.

But here’s where most training falls apart…

Once your dog KNOWS what “come” means (and trust me, they know), continuing to bribe them with treats forever isn’t training – it’s negotiation. And you’ll always lose that negotiation when the stakes are highest, when you most need your dog to get it right.

This is where balanced training comes in:

Once your dog fully understands a command, they need to learn that choosing to ignore it has a consequence. Not a harsh one. Not an angry one. Just a clear, calm consequence that says “nope, that wasn’t the right choice, try again.”

It’s literally how we teach kids:

  • First, we show them how to tie their shoes (positive teaching)
  • We help and encourage them while they learn (rewards and guidance)
  • But eventually, they can’t leave for the park until their shoes are tied (consequence for not doing what they know how to do)

Why this matters for YOUR dog:

The dogs who only know reward-based training often become what I call “treat dependent.” They’ll listen… if you have food. They’ll come… if nothing else is more interesting. They’ll stay… until they decide not to.

But dogs who understand both rewards AND consequences? They become reliable. They listen because it’s the right thing to do, not because you’re bribing them. They come when called even when squirrels exist. You can both fully enjoy off-leash freedom because you can trust them.
